Winter break and 5 things we want to do

Every year at this point in time I get this feeling of almost disbelief- at how the year flew so fast. That feeling seems more and more intense and obvious as we age, I guess, at least that's how I feel. Life seems to go way too fast. It really feels overwhelming sometimes to see how a whole year just slips through your hands like grains of sand and here we are getting ready for Christmas again and starting to plan the year ahead. Bottom line, life does go way too fast.

The last couple of months in town have been very unseasonable. The weather was pretty much around the 60's during October and the two first weeks of November, rarely hitting the 50's, which is really weird in this part of the country during this time. Low temps started to hit Madison by the very end of November and only now we have started to see very low temps (I MEAN, VERY LOW) so winter has officially arrived.

As usual, I need my little list of things I want to do during Winter break otherwise, I get lost in my daily routines and my own daily craziness, and I end up missing all the cool things I really don't want our family to miss.

We decided we want to see the Nutcracker again, this year. Diego is a little older so he'll be able to enjoy it much more. Ice skating lessons have been on my list forever, this year we are doing this. Our favorite place in town to go ice skating is the ice rink at the Edgewater Hotel, in Madison. A beautiful outdoor rink by the Mendota Lake. The Winter Solstice Celebration is also something we don't want to miss on December 16 at The Aldo Leopold Nature Center. We have been to the Summer Solstice Celebration a few times but never to the winter one. Snowshoeing is something new I would like to introduce Diego to, this winter. It is fun, easy, inexpensive and we have a very pretty Arboretum to explore here in town while snowshoeing around it. Sledding, always fun and many parks in town to go to and spend some time sledding down a hill. Can't forget, Star Wars opens on December 16, we'll be there for sure.

Happy winter break.
Stay warm and safe.

Kindergarten

It seems we have finally found a school we really like for D. to start elementary school next fall. I know, it seems so early to start the process, but in order to pick the school we really wanted we needed to start this early. What a relief. What a big relief. We toured at least 10 schools in the last 2 months. In our district, out of our district, public schools and private schools, charter schools and whatever's left in the middle, and somehow there was always something that didn't click to me when touring all those schools. All of them -btw- with very high scores and super nice reviews, but still, there was something that didn't convince me. It happened the same to me when I was looking for preschools for D. two years ago. I visited many, until I went to one that felt right to me instantly, it felt right in my heart. And that was how I felt yesterday morning when we visited the very last school in our list to tour, it felt right. I liked the school, thank God, I liked ...

Lately

It's been so long. I feel I haven't post anything in ages. Life has been seriously busy lately, that's why. And it seems that is the general tendency among friends. Whoever I talk to, they are trying to juggle a million things at once. That's life these days, I guess. The news have been scary, lately. Around the globe. Very scary. This year we have seen all kind of sadness, craziness, nonsense around the world. Even natural disasters have been horrific. And it seems it escalates year after year. To be honest the last few motnhs I have felt the need to hide, to retreat and protect my loved ones. To move somewhere where nothing can reach us, not even social media or TV... -especially social media and TV- But how? How we protect the people we love? How do we hide? Where do we go? Not sure where the world is going and if you have kids it can get really really scary at times. Is this the world we are leaving to them? What I'm sure about though is that more ...

Madison in the summer

For some reason, I don't want to let go of the idea of warm summer-days this year.  Every year and right at this point when summer is kind of fading away and the cool breeze rolls into the city, I usually feel excited and inspired by the arrival of the Fall season and its beautiful colors; not this year. I'm longing for more sunny days, and sunshine and summer scenes like the ones below in my pictures. Not ready for layers yet. Not ready for cold days. But we live in the northern midwest area of the country and seasons don't play around here, they get on time and do their job. I won't complain much, still three full weeks of summer (with grandma and grandpa) and to be fair September is a gorgeous month in Madison as well. Some pictures of beautiful Madison in the summer. Good week to all. Peace and good health, friends.
